How to Style and Organize Your Guest Room

The holidays are right around the corner and that means guests will be arriving soon. Whether you have an immaculate guest room, one that could use some sprucing up, or an empty spare room that is begging to be more, look no further! We compiled all that you’ll need to create, spruce up, or even just double check your guest room.

Preparing Your Guest Room

To create an ideal guest room, you need to start with a clean, organized space. Before arranging the bed or other furniture, we recommend a deep clean: vacuum, dust, and clean the carpet if needed. Make sure there will be plenty of room in the closet for your guest and plan your layout. Try to keep your power outlets easily accessible. For smaller spaces where you may have to block access to the outlet, consider leaving an extension cord for your guest. If you are someone you uses your guest room for storage, de-clutter with under-the bed storage! It will keep everything organized and out of the way of guests. Plus it will be easy for you to access later. Another way to de-clutter the space is to store items in rolling totes. They are easy to relocate when you are expecting a guest.

Now For The Essentials

Now that you’ve prepared your space, you need a bed. Be sure to consider your guests. Do you have families with children visiting or do you mostly host couples and single adults? It’s important to keep this in mind when you choose the bed(s) for the room. You’ll also want to consider the size of the room. If you have ample space and your guest type varies, consider a queen or king size bed. For smaller spaces, consider a plush futon or sleeper sofa. To keep your space versatile, consider purchasing two extra-long twin beds. When pushed side-by-side, they are the same size as a king, which will help accommodate all your guests. With this option, you’ll need to purchase twin and king sized sheets. The king sized fitted sheet will help keep the mattresses snug to give your guests a restful night’s sleep.

Now that you have your bed, the next step is getting your linens and pillows. Make sure to stock your guest room with at least two sets of fresh bed linens. This will allow you to switch out the sheets with ample washing time before the next guest. We recommend having four pillows – two with a medium fill and two with a firm fill. This will give your guests a range of comfort. If you’re worried about your guests’ allergies, consider a down-alternative pillow. You can read about our down and down-alternative products here. Lastly, make sure you have plenty of face, hand, and bath towels. Check out our blog about just how many you need for a household here.

Add Some Extras

With the essentials established, you can add special touches to give your guests a unique experience. Think about your favorite hotel or Airbnb. It probably feels like a home away from home. That is exactly what you want your guests to feel – especially during the holidays.

Simple additions would be extra toiletries (for those who forget something at home) and a simple room spray/mist. You can stock up on travel sized toiletries or purchase reusable dispensable containers and refill them as needed. If you want to keep toothbrushes on hand, consider purchasing some in bulk or asking your local dentist for a few extra. We personally love the Humble Brush because it’s eco-friendly and the company gives back to children in need. Check out their colorful 5-pack here or plain 4-pack here.

Some other special touches to consider: decor and scented products. Add photos or wall art to give the room some flair. You could also add a decorative lamp, vase, or clock. Indoor plants are another easy way to add color and life to a room. Candles and diffusers keep the room smelling good and promote a stress-free, calming environment. Try scents like lavender, eucalyptus, jasmine, or chamomile. You could also try muted scents, like cotton, or other home-y scents like cedar, fir, or sandalwood. Maybe you really want to WOW your guests. Consider baking your favorite holiday cookie or buying some delicious candies close to when your guests arrive. By bundling small packs of a tasty treat, you can give your guests something unique to your home. They’ll love the personal touch.

Bring on the Holidays!

So now that you’ve got a clean, organized space with a bed, fresh linens, and extra special touches to make your guests feel at home, you are ready to take on the holiday season. So kick back, have a mug of apple cider, hot cocoa, or a glass of your favorite wine.
