Be Like B&Bs: Steps to Make Your Home Healthy

Due to travel restrictions and continued health concerns, many short-term rentals (like AirBnB and Vacasa) have made recommendations for their hosts. These recommendations range from new procedures to extra linens. We wanted to give you the same tips and tricks so that you can have a happy, healthy home!

Clean & Disinfect

There’s so many ways we can keep ourselves healthy and safe. One of the most important is keeping our homes clean and sanitized. We recommend creating a semi-consistent cleaning schedule or adding it into your daily/weekly routine. Adding a cleaning regime into your regular routine will help keep you accountable. What’s our favorite way to start fresh? We like to deep clean each room so that maintaining the clean is easier.

Cleaning and disinfecting your home doesn’t stop at wiping down surfaces. While that is still very important, there’s other steps you can take to keep your family germ free. Consider putting some hand sanitizer by the door; You can use it before you leave and right when you get home. You should also consider disinfecting other highly-used home items such as: dishes, sheets/linens, and furniture.

Quick Sanitizing Tips

For Dishes: Wash and Rinse with anti-bacterial dish soap. Then, soak in a diluted bleach solution of 2 teaspoons of bleach per 1 gallon of water. Soak for 2 minutes, then air dry.*

For Bed & Bath Linens: It is recommended to use bleach and dry on the highest heat setting allowed by the manufacturer. For Sevenfold Bed and Bath Linens, we recommend non-chlorine bleach on our white linens and no higher than a medium heat setting. There are color-safe bleach options as well, or you can also use vinegar solutions to disinfect and brighten your colors.

For Furniture: For both cloth and leather furniture, vinegar solutions are the best way to disinfect. Vinegar can often be used in a 1:1 ratio. However, we always recommend checking your manufacturer’s cleaning instructions for the best practices. If cleaning/disinfecting leather, always remember to treat/condition it after cleaning.

Stocking Up

We always encourage stocking up on your linens. In times like this, we believe it especially important to look at what you have in your linen closet. In general, we recommend what’s called a 3-par level of linens. The “Par” or “Par level” is the number of linens you have for each room. For example, on a king bed with 4 king pillows, you would want 3 fitted sheets, 3 flat sheets, 12 pillowcases. . Having 3-par allows one in use, one in the wash, and one in the closet. For bathrooms, if one “set” is 2 bath towels, 1 hand towel, and 2 rolled face towels, your total of linens would be 6 bath towels, 3 hand towels, and 6 rolled face towels.

In our When to Wash and When to Toss blogs, we talked about the importance of switching out your linens. You view our bathroom edition here or bedroom edition here. Switching out high-traffic items such as hand and face towels can help keep germs at bay and prevent from spreading them around the home. While we still work through COVID-19 and increase our overall cleanliness at home, increasing your par level of towels can be very beneficial! Consider purchasing extra hand and face towels, as well as pillowcases and sheets.

With more items stocked up, you can regularly switch out your linens to keep everyone feeling fresh and clean!
